An interdisciplinary jury will award prizes for garments made of at least 90% reused and recycled materials. Prizes will be awarded based on the design’s innovation, sustainability and construction, and the garment’s overall visual impact.

The competition is open to interdisciplinary teams of S&T students with no more than six members. At least one team member must be from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business and one from the College of Engineering and Computing.

Examples of materials that can be used include food packaging and wrappers, electronic components, container lids, and construction materials. Designs must be original and will be judged on their level of creativity and complexity. Teams are responsible for recruiting a model to walk the runway while wearing the garment. Members of the team, other S&T students, faculty, or staff are eligible to model. Garments must not have the potential to endanger the model or viewers.

“Designing and showcasing a garment made of materials that would otherwise be discarded will offer students an opportunity to explore the connections between innovation, sustainability, and artistic expression,” says Dr. Karen Head, professor of English and technical communication and S&T’s arts and innovation director, who advises the competition. “It will also be a phenomenal opportunity for students to collaborate with others from disciplines with whom they may not otherwise interact.”

To participate in the show, teams are required to email a one- to two-page written statement explaining their artistic vision and technical process, as well as a short video previewing the garment, to khead@mst.edu no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2022.
